||If the Bike Boom Box isn't big enough for you, try this system.
I conceived it while driving home from Burning Man 2011, riding alone in a rented SUV with a good stereo. I thought to myself, "Why doesn't my bike get this loud?" So I set to work solving this pressing problem.
It's a 300 watt PA system with 12" woofers and horn tweeters mounted in a pair of 16-inch Sonotube cardboard tubes. The system is attached to an Xtracycle Free Radical with Wideloaders using a simple yet robust mounting technique.
Each speaker tube weighs just 25 pounds. A 150 watt per channel Class D stereo amplifier provides enough power to make your ears bleed.
An MP3 player is attached to the top tube with a standard bike mounting bracket for easy access. The system will work with any brand of MP3 player.
A lithium-ion battery pack provides over four hours of listening time at full volume, and over 10 hours at reduced volume. A USB charging port is provided to keep your MP3 player charged up during long events. The LED headlight also uses the USB power.
Don't forget to watch the road when choosing a song!
The Xtracycle Sound System is for you to make. See the Build tab above for mostly-complete instructions.
